The journey of sourcing and securing a location is most often an arduous, but contradictory exciting journey fraught with a roller coaster ride of unanticipated ups and downs, twists and turns. This was the case in our debut feature Rare Blood where, after securing a location we lost it. Gillian then went on to secure our superb principal location at Hillhouse where we shot the bulk of the film, and where the story truly belonged.
A similar situation occurred with our exciting up and coming project The Man in the Mirror, a powerful and poignant Zulu language dramatic feature. We initially secured a superb location at the Ecabazini Lodge, only for it to be subsequently sold off and degenerate into a state of total disrepair.
However Gillian, as tenacious as ever, was able to secure an even better location at the superb Sherwood Makhosi in the Kaarkloof area of the KZN midlands. What is so advantageous about the location is not only that it affords us the opportunity to create stunning, authentically Zulu visuals, but also that the majority of the shoot can take place in a tight orbit around the principal location, and most of the services and props required are easily accessible, and within budget.
Interestingly we first met the proprietor of Sherwood Makhosi, James Martin at the screening of Rare Blood in the KZN midlands in 2020. James has been incredibly helpful and enthusiastic in his involvement. He illustrated to us exactly what the area can afford us in terms of breathtaking visuals, a truly authentic Zulu lifestyle, and services, making this an ideal and practical principal location to tell this important story.
With a superbly talented cast, a vibrant creative team, progressive producers, and with investment from USA, funding by the NFVF, the DTI rebate, we envisage having the resources to create a beautiful authentically Zulu feature movie that will enthral audiences, not only in Africa, but throughout the world!
